Global Digital Compact

In September 2024, the Global Digital Compact (GDC) was adopted at the UN Summit of the Future. Global leaders gathered in New York to sign this historic international agreement to secure a better digital future for all, grounded in human rights.

Importantly, the final text reaffirmed the commitment of states to protect children’s rights in the digital world. Such was illustrated in the promise to “strengthen legal and policy frameworks to protect the rights of the child in the digital space” and to “prioritise the development and implementation of national online child safety policies and standards” by 2030.

The GDC will be a step closer to a safer digital future for children, and 5Rights welcomes that the final text has incorporated our recommendation of grounding the GDC in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and strengthening domestic legislation and policies to protect children and their rights.
