UNCRC General comment No. 25: children’s rights apply online

The Convention on the Rights of the Child codifies children’s rights and is the basis upon which much domestic legislation in relation to children rests around the world. Following the Council on the Rights of the Child’s adoption of the General comment 25 on children’s rights in the digital world, the 196 States who are signatories to the Convention will now have to report formally on its provisions. Its adoption makes explicit – for the first time – that children’s rights apply in the digital world.

The Comment is a culmination of three years of work during which 5Rights Foundation, supported the Committee on the Rights of the Child as they drafted the General comment 25. 40 nation states, hundreds of organisations, 709 children and 50 dedicated experts from 28 countries have contributed to the process. Today we celebrate this incredible joint effort on behalf of children across the globe.

As Chair of the Steering Committee, 5Rights has published the Explanatory Notes to the General comment.

5Rights has also developed a child-friendly version of this essential document for children’s rights in the digital environment.
