New Jersey Kids Code
The New Jersey Kids Code Act (A4015/S3413) was introduced in early 2026 by Assemblywoman Andrea Katz and Senator Raj Mukherji.
The bill introduced an Age-Appropriate Design Code for New Jersey and established standards for online platforms relating to usage by kids, including increasing privacy and safety settings, prohibiting targeted advertising, and increasing parental control of their children’s accounts.
On Tuesday August 11th 2026, Governor Mikie Sherrill signed the Kids Code Act into law, as part of a wider package of children’s online safety legislation. The law codifies New Jersey’s Age-Appropriate Design Code, requires platforms to set default privacy settings for children to the highest level, and restricts the use of addictive design features such as infinite scroll and mass notifications. It will take effect in September 2027.
We know the consequences of spending too much time online. Families are seeing the impacts, from increased anxiety, depression, and eating disorders to disrupted sleep and harmful content reaching kids far too easily. […] This package is about making online spaces safer for minors in an ever-changing digital landscape.”
