Updated key priority issues on child rights and the digital Environment
The digital environment is now an integral part of children’s lives, with one in three internet users being under 18. However, the rapid growth of digital platforms also presents serious risks to children’s rights, from exposure to harmful content and exploitation to privacy violations. In response, the 5Rights Foundation, alongside other global organisations, has contributed to a joint position paper that underscores the urgency of implementing stronger protections for children in the digital world.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly General Comment 25, lays the groundwork for safeguarding children online. The recent discussions at the Human Rights Council and the upcoming UN General Assembly Resolution aim to push for meaningful, global policies that prioritize children’s safety, privacy, and well-being in the digital space. Key actions include enacting laws to hold businesses accountable for respecting children’s rights, closing the digital divide, and ensuring that children’s voices are heard in shaping digital policies.
