Joint Submission to the ACHPR on Children’s Rights and AI in Africa
Building on the Children & AI Design Code and the Children’s Global AI Summit on Africa, 5Rights led a coordinated effort with 10 partner organisations from across the African continent, calling on the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) to reaffirm core principles of children’s rights in the digital environment enshrined in African and international frameworks.
Our joint input to the Study on human and peoples’ rights and artificial intelligence, robotics, and other new and emerging technologies in Africa encourages the African continent to continue leading the way in building the digital world children deserve by following the roadmap provided by existing African and international children’s rights frameworks.
As AI systems increasingly mediate all aspects of children’s lives, the ACHPR can play a critical role in empowering African Union member states and tech companies to implement their clear duties to protect and respect children’s rights in the digital world, including under the African Union Child Online Safety and Empowerment Policy and General comment No. 25 to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
