Return of the Chat Roulette? Walkie Talkie – All Talk case study

This case study examines the safety of Walkie Talkie – All Talk, a chat roulette-style social platform marketed at teenagers. 5Rights looked at what children could experience in an ordinary use of the service, by analysing the app’s policies and conducting structured testing with child and adult test accounts.

The research found serious deficiencies in the app’s safeguards, such as poor age verification, child profiles being visible by default to adult strangers, weak tools for content moderation and reporting, and manipulative design elements pushing engagement and spending. The report assesses these findings against relevant UK and EU legislation, including the Digital Services Act and the UK Age Appropriate Design Code.

5Rights calls for immediate action from regulators and urges digital services likely to be accessed by children to embed children’s rights, safety and privacy by design and default.
