Nebraska Kids Code
Introduced by Senator Carolyn Bosn (R) at the request of Governor Jim Pillen (R), Nebraska’s Age-Appropriate Online Design Code Act (LB504) seeks to improve young people’s digital experiences by requiring tech companies to implement privacy-by-default and safety-by-design protections for kids online.
Focusing on “design features”, the Code engages with time-absorbing features like push alerts, in-app purchases, appearance-altering filters, infinite scroll, and more. In Section Six, the Code looks to safeguard users’ personal data, affirming that companies can only collect “the minimum amount of a user’s personal data necessary to provide the specific elements of an online service with which a user has knowingly engaged”.
After passing the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee, arriving in the Senate in February 2025, the Code is now in the Final Reading stage, before it heads to the Governor’s desk for signature.
5Rights will continue to support the progression of the Code and push for passage to protect and empower Nebrasken children.
