Joint submission to the Canadian Children’s Privacy Code

Over 40 leading Canadian experts and organisations have come together to call for comprehensive protections in the Children’s Privacy Code, addressing the growing concern over the commercialisation of children’s data.

Led by 5Rights, experts from healthcare, education, academia such as the Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children, Canadian Paediatric Society and The Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy have submitted a joint response to Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s exploratory consultation on the Children’s Privacy Code.

With 96% of children’s favourite websites using trackers and 72 million data points collected on a child before age 13, urgent action is needed to ensure children’s rights are prioritised. This joint submission to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner outlines 15 key principles to create a safer digital environment for children, including privacy by design, data minimisation, and an end to targeted advertising.

By adopting these recommendations, Canada has the opportunity to be a global leader in setting the standards for children’s privacy and digital rights.
