Joint letter against delays and deregulatory changes in the EU AI Act

5Rights, alongside more than 45 leading digital and consumer rights groups and experts including the Center for Democracy & Technology, sent a joint letter to the Executive Vice-president of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen. The letter expresses strong opposition to potential revisions of the EU AI Act as part of the upcoming ‘Digital Simplification package’.

The signatories welcome efforts to enhance clarity and coherence across the EU digital rulebook, but warn that such reforms should not come at the expense of fundamental rights or weaken hard-won legal protections already established in the AI Act. The laws in the scope of the Digital Simplification package are essential in ensuring that Europe’s approach to technology and innovation remains grounded in fundamental rights, consumer protection, public safety and trust.

Amid increasing pressure to deregulate the digital space in the EU, the signatories urge the Commission to resist calls for weakening protections for European citizens. Instead, they advocate for the robust enforcement and implementation of the AI Act and the wider EU digital rulebook.
