Nevada Kids Code
In April 2023, the Nevada Kids Code was introduced by State Senator Edgar Flores (D) and Nevada Assemblywoman Jill Dickman (R), as the bipartisan Nevada Age Appropriate Design Code Act (AB 320).
Inspired by the Age Appropriate Design Codes (AADC) of the UK and California, the Nevada ADDC would require digital platforms and services to uphold privacy by design and default if they are likely to be accessed by children, and ensure such is designed in an age-appropriate way that serves their best interests.
Recent polling by Accountable Tech and LOG OFF, has highlighted the harm against US children that regulations like the Nevada AADC are trying to mitigate; 66% feel they are losing track of time with Black and Hispanic teenagers being disproportionately affected, nearly 50% lose sleep because they feel ‘stuck’ on social media, and 74% of teens find themselves scrolling for too long.
In response to the introduction of Nevada’s AADC, Nicole Gill, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Accountable Tech, stated:
“We firmly believe that a child’s safety should be paramount and that platforms should enact the highest privacy protections when designing, developing and providing that feature. Through the passage of AB 320 in Nevada, we hope to see that belief become a reality. ”
5Rights will continue to support the progression of the Code, and ensure it upholds its commitment to building on best practice standards.
