Baroness Beeban Kidron, Chair, 5Rights, response to the ICO’s opinion on Age Assurance for the Children’s Code

“I am delighted that the Information Commissioner’s Office has today published the Commissioner’s opinion on Age Assurance. It makes it clear that companies have responsibilities to identify and support children using their platforms and services. As the ICO opinion demonstrates, age assurance is neither a technical impossibility nor an Orwellian nightmare, but does require guidance.

“I support the principles the ICO has set out and call again on the UK Government to accelerate a statutory code of conduct for privacy-preserving age assurance that is trustworthy and supports children’s positive engagement with the digital world.

“The UK is making great strides to protect children online and I commend government and the regulator for their efforts. Age assurance may not be a silver bullet, but it is a crucial tool and one we urgently need.”
