5Rights response to the delay of the Online Safety Bill

14 July 2022

5Rights statement:

Children’s safety should not come second to politics. We are disappointed by the further delay of the Online Safety Bill. Children should not have to wait for the protections they urgently need.

Quote from our Founder and Chair, Baroness Beeban Kidron:

“After years of promises made by multiple ministers, children have today been horribly abandoned by the government. This bill is an important vehicle to bring in meaningful protections for children online. Whatever disagreements there are on the provisions, parliament, parents and children agree that tech companies must be made to design and deliver products that do not exploit or put children at risk. Today those children are being asked to wait - again - for our support.”
