Head of Communications

5Rights Foundation is looking for an experienced, independent press and PR professional to join our small and high-impact team. As Head of Communications you will take on a central and strategic role in driving global social change, overseeing, delivering and coordinating the Foundation's press and public communication activities, such as digital campaigns, events and publications.

This is a unique opportunity for someone with creative flair, who can demonstrate a wide range of skills including the ability to communicate complex messaging in an accessible way, design strategies to maximize our strengths, lead coordination efforts between stakeholders, prioritize workloads and deliver high-quality communications materials.

Knowledge of or experience in child rights, digital/data protection policy fields would be advantageous as well as additional language skills such as French or Spanish. We are offering remote working with employee contracts in the UK or Belgium; salary ranges from £43-45k (for UK) or €61-63k (for Belgium). Candidates should be prepared to work flexible hours across different time zones.

5Rights Foundation exists to ensure a digital world that will serve children and young people today and for future generations.

We are a small team of senior professionals and experts delivering change in how the digital world works. We have shifted the narrative and the agenda through provocative comms campaigns (e.g. Twisted Toys), pioneering research (e.g. Pathways) and award-winning tools (e.g. Child Online Safety Toolkit). We continue to drive real-life change thanks to an outstanding track-record of delivering legislation (e.g. Californian Age Appropriate Design Code), policy and regulatory frameworks (e.g. UNCRC General comment No. 25), and industry standards (e.g. IEEE 2089).

Key responsibilities

The Head of Communications will oversee, drive and deliver (or coordinate delivery of) 5Rights’ press and public communications activities, spanning digital, print, events and press, coordinating closely with other team members.The position will be self-managing and have design, budgeting and coordination responsibilities for the breadth of communications tasks, including identifying and managing external consultants and suppliers as needed.

Person specification

This is a highly challenging and rewarding position for a professional with (at least most of) the following attributes:

  • A sharp and creative mind, eye and pen to deliver impactful strategy, messaging and assets for a given audience;
  • The ingenuity to design strategies and practical solutions that make the most of our strengths and help us continue to punch above our weight;
  • A meticulous eye for detail and proven ability to design and deliver high-quality communications products, including campaigns, events and publications;
  • The reliability, patience and relentless focus required to get complex deliverables over the line, managing processes from A-Z;
  • The interpersonal, communication and leadership skills (including humility and self-confidence) to coordinate various stakeholders and build lasting positive relationships;
  • Strong prioritisation and organisation skills to manage various processes and pieces of work in parallel;
  • A can-do, action and solution-oriented attitude;
  • Self-motivation and drive to work independently and cohesively within a remote team;
  • The commitment, energy and enthusiasm to deliver on 5Rights’ ambitious mission.

The following attributes are highly desirable:

  • A solid knowledge of the political communications landscape either in the UK or at the EU level, and ability to rapidly deliver across our jurisdictions;
  • Experience working with the press;
  • Experience working internationally and in culturally-diverse settings;
  • Knowledge and/or experience of the policy fields of child rights, digital and/or data protection;
  • Knowledge of other languages, notably French or Spanish.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate these skills though substantial professional experience and a track record of success in driving change.

Renumeration and details

  • Location: Remote position with employee contract in UK or Belgium. If based in London, hybrid working in 5Rights London office space is available.
  • Salary: £43,000-45,000 for UK-based candidate, with flexibility depending on experience; EUR 61.000-63.000 for a Belgium-based candidate.
  • Working hours: Full time, with some accommodation necessary for work across time-zones.
  • Statutory pension contribution.
  • 25 days of annual leave.
  • No immediate line management responsibility.
  • Work equipment including a laptop and mobile phone will be provided.
  • Starting date: asap.
  • Reporting line: Operations Director, based in London.
